They are Wonderful Dogs..A great choice, They are very much like labs in the growing up stage ..They stay puppies ALONG time..Yet they are loyal loving faithful pets. They require brushing and everything else other dogs do..They are pretty smart, like to play fetch, swim, and be with you...They can have problems just like other dogs So you need to be firm in training....Good Luck on your New Golden..One of My All time Favorites

I have 2 golden retrievers. A 6 year old female, & a 8 month old male. They are the sweetest dogs. They do shed quite a bit, so if you want an immaculate house, & want to give the dog the proper attention, you can't have both. Make sure that the dog has plenty of chew toys. They don't care if they chew a toy or a piece of furniture, or a brand new pair of leather boots (been there). I did take the puppy to puppy training classes. I wish I would have done that with the older one. Just be sure to socialize them alot. You & the dog will be much better off. Lots of luck!!

Golden retrievers can be very gentle and loving dogs. Goldens can be very hyper for the first 3 to 4 years of their life. With proper training and establishing leadership to your dog right away is vital to a happy home and happy and calm dog. Goldens can be very gentle dogs with children, however because of the retreving instinct programed into the breed with decades of selective breeding they can be quite protective of the things they retrieve, especially when children try to take their retrieved object away. For this reason you need to establish that your children are above the dog from the very begining. The children need to participate in feeding and training as well as yourself. All breeds have the ability to be trained easily if you prove your leadership skills immediately.
With grooming. Goldens need proper grooming at least every two to three months. NEVER get your golden shaved down. This will ruin the coat and cause possibly serious skin problems. Goldens tend to love water. If a golden has a great supply of undercoat and goes swimming it can cause serious skin problems such as "hot spots". This is caused by a collection of water in the fur that can not dry properly. This water will react to the natural bacteria on the dogs skin causing itching and sores. Therefore, it is important to get your dog groomed regularily but a professional who knows what a "Shed-less" treatment is. It is a special tool used to remove the undercoat from the dog and leave the wirey top coat only. This creates enough air flow through your dogs coat to not only keep them cool during the summer months but to allow the coat to dry after swimming.

Well...they take about 2 years to grow into their brains, if you know what I mean. They're very smart, but they don't focus well when they're young. They're very loyal, and LOVE attention. THe grooming is probably the hardest part though, and it's not good for them to shave them, like some people do. Their fur keeps in their cool air and their hot air, depending on the weather. GRs are fantastic dogs--great with EVERYONE. But if you want to skip the whole puppy phase, try going to a rescue group and maybe picking up a purebred that was abandoned...you can still get one probably about a year old! Good luck!

I have a four month old golden retriever, and she's a sweetie but she doesnt seem to understand that there is a time for play and a time for....not play.
Yeah but they're good. The only bad things I can say so far is that they're hyper.

I've got an 11 yr. old golden.....they are great dogs.....they do alot of dameage as puppies if they get bored....plan on crating them when you are not at home.....they will like the crate when they get used to it....it will be their "home". Once the puppy stage is over, they are the best dogs....you must brush them about once a week. be sure to clean their ears with ear cleaner.....they can get infected if not taken care of.....just be patient with their puppyhood....buy lots of toys and train....train....train....show them you're the boss! They will love you 4-ever! mines name Kali

Awesome dogs. Don't get one if you don't want to hang out with it because they are people dogs and will not be happy just stuck out in a backyard away from you. Advantages --- you won't be worried about it attacking people. Disadvantages --- shedding, perhaps...

They are very playful and childish. Even when the get to be 1 years old or older they are very energetic. Also they get jealous when you have kids.
