Sounds to me like you need intensive conditioning treatments.
Redken makes some good intensive conditioning treatments, they have in-salon treatments, and take home ones also.
The take home ones are more cosmetic, so make your hair feel softer, whereas the in-salon ones are full on protein which penetrates deep into the hair shaft.

Dont buy conditioning treatments from the supermarket, go directly to the salon, and by a professionally recommended product.
Cheaper supermarket brands are silicone based, don't actually do anything to the inner hair shaft, they just put a 'coating' on the cuticle (outer) layer of the hair shaft so it 'appears' soft and silky.
Don't wash your hair every day, you hair needs natural oils.

Try combing your hair when in the shower with conditioner in it. It will be easier. Never ever brush your hair when its wet, only use a comb. A wide toothed comb is best, it wont stretch and pull your hair.

In order for your hair to grow, you need to get it regularly trimmed. It takes off the drying, split ends, therefore will grow longer, because its not breaking off further up the strand. Most people cant understand how this works.
Eat a healthy diet.
Wear a hat in the sun, or a hair sunscreen.

There are products that will make your hair 'appear' thicker, but this is only until you next wash your hair. The semi permanent way to get thicker hair is by having extensions added.
