As others have stated, a UPS will not give you lead poisoning unless you break open the sealed lead-acid battery and eat or lick the contents.

However, because most UPS's do use sealed lead-acid batteries, these batteries can emit hydrogen sulfide and/or sulfur gasses if they are defective. If you notice a sharp sulfuric acid or rotten egg smell emanating from the UPS, immediately remove the UPS to an outside location such as your garage and replace the batteries.

Adverse health symptoms include throat irritation, headaches and even death.

It will not cause any problem to you right now as youare using it, but when you will throw it or dispose it or simply send to junk-yard, it will cause a problem to nature and living beings. See, disposal of eletronic goods is one of the greatest problems we are facing today, because all these goods create hazardous chemicals in disosal process.

Norm's right. Don't eat them. They are commonly called "sealed lead-acid" batteries for a reason... they're sealed. And, therefore, you can't get to the lead. Now will you stop worrying.
