My nominees:
1. Tommy Douglas: Founder of Canada's modern welfare state. The man who made Canada a country of compassion and not rampant capitalism.
2. Harriet Tubman: She was American, but she was crucial in the 'Underground Railroad' that smuggled slaves north into free territory - including Canada. She was an inspiration to all those who take personal risks to ensure the freedom of others.
3. Tecumseh: One of the many who fought to prevent the white man from completely destroying the native community and way of life.
4. Lester Pearson: Canada's greatest Prime Minister and one of the most important agents for world peace.
5. Dr. Norman Bethune: a humanitarian who died in service to the world.
6. Dr. Henry Morgentaler: a fearless crusader for women's control over their own bodies.
And my two personal heroes while growing up: Ed Broadbent and Ben Johnson.

What do you mean by hero? I'd say a hero is a romantic figure who dies in a battle for his country.
In Hungary we have quite a lot, mostly in connection with the wars with the Ottoman Empire, when the defenders held fortresses successfully against very huge armies. The latest romantic hero in my opinion was Petőfi, who was a leading character in a revolution. He was primarily a poet, but he also had a great part in initiating this revolution, and in the end he died in a battle. It also contributes to his hero image that his body has never been found.

Devalera? Dev? A national hero? In which nation? The United States, maybe, since that's where he was from. Or Nazi Germany maybe since he did nothing to oppose their foul attempts to stamp liberty under the jackboot of racial purity and couldn't wait to trot round to the German Embassy and offer his sincere condolences on the death of that nice Mr Hitler. But not in Ireland, surely. Not in ireland where he started a bloody civil war which not only killed thousands of ordinary Irishmen but ensured that the temporary division of the island has endured to the present day. A man who lists General Michael Collins as a hero surely can't also list the man who killed him.

In Wales it is Tom Jones in some people's eyes, because he was the first to get out of Wales, escape to the outside world and make it big, becoming a superstar. H still claims to be Welsh, but doesn't come back here much, and is still worshipped/loved by most women back here in Wales.
