Because it's metric. Everything in science is measured in metric.
A hectare is 100m long on a side. So a square 100m long on a side is 10,000 square meters. A football field is not quite 100m long, so it'd be that long on each side of a square. That's a bit bigger than an acre, I'm thiking it's like two or three acres. You can do the conversion on your own, there are 3.28 feet in a meter and there are 43,560 square feet in an acre.

"The hectare is commonly used in many countries, especially in domains concerned with land planning and management such as agriculture, forestry, and town planning where the use of square metres would be cumbersome and unnecessarily precise."

It is 10,000 square metres, or about 2.5 acres.

10,000 square meters. I usually hear acres, so I have no answer unless you are in another country that has embraced the metric system.
