"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

It means that you shouldn't lie against your neighbor (or anyone for that matter) to make them get in trouble for something that they didn't do.

Well now that depends which version of the 10 commandments you are reading. The King James Bible says that the ninth commandment is "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour."
However if you are reading the Roman catholic version it says, you shall not covert your neighbours wife!
What the RC church has done, is to take out the second commandment, which is, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water, under the earth, though shalt not bow down to them or serve them."
They have taken that out of their teachings as they make BILLIONS of $$$$ selling idols and images for their people to worship. And if people stopped worshiping images their sales would go down - SO THEY REMOVED A COMMANDMENT! Can you believe that?
But so they still have 10, they made the 10th commandment into two. Don't believe me? Check the Vatican website!

You mean "Thou shalt not steal"? Or did you mean "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour"? I'm looking at Exodus 20 online on www.biblegateway.com and it's sort of hard to tell which one is the ninth. Anyway, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour" means you can't say incorrect things about another person (spread lies).

Do not speak untruths about your neighbors or ANYONE for that matter... Do not knowingly tell a LIE about someone..

Exodus 20:16
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Deuteronomy 5:20
Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Matthew 19:18
Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Mosiah 13:23
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Book of the Law of the Lord 1:9
Thou shalt not bear false witness: thou shalt not speak falsely before the King, nor before the Judge, nor in the assembly of the Princes, nor in the presence of the Ruler, nor unto the Minister of the Law, nor among the multitude; nor in the ear of thy friend, nor to thy wife, nor thy child, nor thy servant: neither shalt thou withhold the truth from the King, nor the Judge, nor him that is set in authority: for thus shall righteousness be established in all thy borders.

vs 16
Requires the maintaining and promoting of truth between people, and of our neighbor’s good name and our own, especially in witness-bearing.
Forbids whatsoever is prejudicial to truth, or injurious to our own, or our neighbor’s, good name.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Thou shalt not bear false witness.

*** You just entered it as an addition ***

Once again, the response that 'amfound2' submitted is riddled with lies and hate.

'amfound2' wrote:
"The King James Bible says that the ninth commandment is ..."

That is false. The 10 commandments are not numbered in ANY translation of the Bible.

Look at Exodus 20:2-17 and Deut 5:6-21. This is where the 10 Commandments are found. But there are more that 10 things to do or not do. For example:

10 "You shall not" statements
1 "Remember to keep Sabbath Holy"
1 "Six days you may labor"
1 "Rest on the Sabbath"
1 "Honor father and mother"
1 "remember that you too were once slaves" (Deut 5:15)

The Bible tells us that there are 10 Commandments (Exodus 34:28) but it does not tell us how to divide the statements in Exodus 20:2-17 and Deut 5:6-21 to arrive at only 10 Commandments.

Different groups have divided them in different ways, creating 2 Christian "versions" of the 10 commandments. Both versions contain ALL of the same information.

Latin Rite Catholics and Lutherans use a numbering determined by St. Augustine around 400 AD.

Eastern (Orthodox) Catholics and most Protestants use a different numbering ( I'm not sure who determined that version).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says:

The division and numbering of the Commandments have varied in the course of history. The present catechism follows the division of the Commandments established by St. Augustine, which has become traditional in the Catholic Church. It is also that of the Lutheran confessions. The Greek Fathers worked out a slightly different division, which is found in the Orthodox Churches and Reformed communities. (CCC 2066)

Latin Rite Catholic version:

1. Thou shalt not have strange Gods before me and Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
2. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord your God in Vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s day
4. Honor thy father and thy mother
5. Thou shalt not kill
6. Thou shalt not commit adultery
7. Thou shalt not steal
8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods

Eastern Catholic and Protestant version:

1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy
5. Honor thy father and thy mother
6. Thou shalt not kill
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery
8. Thou shalt not steal
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife and Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.

For Catholics, Commandments 1, 2 and 3 are about our relationship with God (Love of God) and 4-10 are about our relationship with others (Love of Neighbor).

The commandment "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor" [which is the 8th commandment in the Catholic numbering] means to not lie, especially about the Church that Jesus founded, i.e. the Roman Catholic Church.
