What this simply means is that you, like everyone else, are a selfish creature; and that rather than change yourself, you would much rather change the whole world (to order it as you would). When you can discern for yourself the folly of your ways, and make the decision to be a miracle to others, a catalyst for positive change in the world; then you would have overcome your selfish nature and mastered yourself. After you, all else is conquered. However, to achieve this you must be great indeed...

It means if you can control your own desires, discipline yourself you can conquer almost anything. Example: You know you should be studying for that test. Your desires win out, you want to watch TV, or hang out with your friends, and end up failing the test. You force yourself to study no matter how you feel to pass the test. When it comes to doing other things in life, you use the same tactics, you tough it out to get to your goal without being distracted.

Just a guess, but I think it would be true to say that self-control is the way to ensure that one makes wise choices, and in doing so probably has more success than someone who gives in to instant gratification.
