VA is a very expensive area, but you will also get a higher BAH.

Base housing isn't as good a deal as it used to be. As far as I know, all housing has been turned over to private management, and you are now required to receive the regular housing allowance, then pay for your base housing - guess who comes out on the short end of the stick in that deal.... the BAH does not quite cover the rent...
You should call up there and get all the details before planning on going into base housing.

personal feeling here.. PPV housing is only a good deal if you are Junior enlisted with at least 2 kids. otherwise, your money could be better spent elsewhere, even in DC.
check out SITES to see if the base housing has gone PPV, and what's available for his paygrade and Bedroom entitlement. You might just find you can get better housing on the economy.
