My wife and I LOVE our 4 year old German Shephard Barbie, but we have a problem...a few really..we trained her ourselves and for the most part..she is excellent..she'll lick you to tell you she has to go...but she won't go in the back yard..you have to walk her..I walk her 3 times a day..When I lived in Washington DC..we took her to the park because we didn't have a backyard...so Barbie is used to that...due to anal retentive leash laws in CA, neither Barbie or we are very impressed. I am in the military and we move around..and we found out 2 mos. ago that my wife is Pregnant with our second child..Our first is still 18 months old..so with 2 car seats and a sedan and mom and dad...you can see how a dog in the mix, walks and a new mom who might have a c-section here in Dec..makes having a dog VERY tough..we don't want to give her away...but we feel there is nothing better to do...we don't want to give her back to the pound..in 6 mos they can euthanize, time and money are limited,HELP

my wife is Brasilian so our dog understands Portuguese and English commands..

i can email pics...

also she is completely up to date on shots

she is a LOT of fun..but we fear that because of her breed and being black and tan people tend to be afraid of her-she is afraid of her own shadow..she wants to know who the strangers in the house are..so we DO have a kiddie gate so we can put her in the kitchen or in the backyard during visits..(which is why she hates the yard)..it is a GREAT dog for a young married couple who can afford it..she is good with kids , but since my wife and I played with her at a swing set and she'd play with us by nipping our heels as we swung..she thinks that is playing..so that is reason for concern..

my wife and I let her really be a dog..we didn't mind that she was on the sofa and that she barks..since i work military and grave yard shifts..barbie protects the house
but that can be fixed. she doesn't bark at night and eats all by herself ?thoughts?

Having a dog and children is not hard at all. Does your dog need to go everwhere with you and the 2 kids? Most people who have children get mini vans so that is also an option. You eventually will have to get something bigger anyhow.

Your going to have to start teaching her to go potty in the back yard, she WILL go.. Walk her in the yard on the leash and tell her to go potty, once she is doing that then remove the leash and give the same command. When she starts doing potty then take her out, tell her to go potty and thenas she is going walk back into the house (watch her though)..

Do this until you can open the door and let her out to go potty without you.. SHe WILL go, you just have to train her that the back yard is ok to potty in.

Also, how is time limited? You have until Dec, 5 months! If you absolutely feel you cannot keep her then put an ad in the paper, or on http://www.craigslist.org (it's free).. Ask for a small adoption fee of no more than 75.00.

Or, get in touch with a rescue group that can help you place her. Look for one that does GSD only and they may be able to foster her as well.

ANd please, in the future when you decide to get another dog..Don't, unless you know that you will always be able to care for it. I am a breeder, and no offense, but I will not sell my puppies to military people, and I live near one of the largest posts in the US..We have army and airforce right next to each other.

The reason I wont is because they move to much and often get sent overseas and cannot take their dog with them.. I saw my sister-in-law and her husband do this at least 3 times with dogs.

Look around to see if you can get your dog a place in a rescue for GSD or an all breed rescue.
You may have to make a donation for them to take her into the program. It helps pay for vet care and heartworm preventative and food and such.
They are good people and will try to match your dog with a new home that will work for her and for the new family.
Good luck.

Try a German Shephard rescue group. I hope she finds a home that will love her.

PLEASE DONT GIVE BARBIE AWAY FOR FREE. too many people are out there looking for free animals to torture. they have no money invested so its pleasuring the person to torture the animal and they have no money invested. this is a big thing for people to look for free animals. they also get a free animal and sell it to a lab for testing purposes and we all know how heartwrenching that is. so please, dont give barbie away for free. she could be tortured or sold to a labratory. remember, there are a lot of people out there looking for drug money or alcohol money. any pet given away free will probably be sold to buy drugs.
