"Mate" is that other person with which you have a special (friendly, romantic, or sexual) relationship. To "mate"is to have sexual relations, and applies to animals too. In Chess, to "check" is to directly attack the other persons king. If the king can neither move, capture the attacking piece with the king or another of his pieces, nor interpose another of his pieces along the line of attack (impossible to do if the attacking piece is a knight, then it becomes a "check mate" and the game is over. The other guy loses. "mate" (I am not sure here if the correct spelling is mate or matte) is a paint that is not glossy. "mate" (Spanish) is a very strong variety of tea very much enjoyed by Argentinians. "maté" (Spanish) means "I killed". As in "Maté a Bush", which means: "I killed Bush". This is just an example.
