I am a hijab wearing Muslim women. How will I be treated if I visited Australia?

Im Muslim and I stayed in Sydney for a week and my mom wears a hijab. Heres what Ive noticed... I live in Colorado, USA and over here there are some racist people but they talk behind your back and theyll be friendly to your face. But in Sydney, the racist people tend to be more up front about their racism... Im brown skinned and weve had some obcenities being shouted about our skin color and my moms hijab and what not. The point is there is racism everywhere... but I prefer honest racism cause then I know who is racist and if they happen to catch me on a bad day Ill send them to the hospital.... Dont worry about it too much, us Muslims have been persecuted by just about everyone since the beginning of our religion... were tough people so youll be fine... Assalamualaikum

I would think you will be treated with respect and courtesy... just like any other human being.

What you wear makes no difference to how you should be treated. Some countries judge on appearances... but Australia doesn't.

You'll enjoy the country too much to even feel so self conscious about wearing a hijab! Enjoy.

All the answers here have been personal opinions on how these people would treat you. I agree with them.

However, the correct answer is that you will be treated with suspicion because you're a muslim. People will look at you in the street and if you get on a bus or a train with a bag people may get up and sit somewhere else. I've seen it happen here recently.

The problem is that our government have been telling us (indirectly) not to trust Muslims. Our "brave soldiers" are off fighting Muslims, ooops, I mean 'terrorists'. After bombings in Bali (by Muslims) and London (by Muslims) and after a fear campaign run by the government all Muslims are viewed with some fear by some people in the street.

However, don't let that stop you coming. You are quite welcome here and most people in Australia are like the people that responded to your question - Friendly and Welcoming.

Even before wearing hijab myself, I've travelled to many places around the world. Ppl no matter what they wear or their beliefs are treated kindly anywhere.

I know you can see some abusive ppl here but these ppl are just like that in YA. They are the minority here, rest assured.

Once they put on they coats and caps and leave their homes they are more humane.

Life's like that.

We are a pretty friendly lot over here, and mostly very accepting as long as you respect our culture too. But the same as the rest of the world, there are a few people who make trouble and make the rest of the country look bad.

Do your research on past new items and steer clear of troubled areas such as Cronulla in Sydney, and I'm sure that you will have a fantastic visit to our beautiful country.

Remember Australia used to have a colour-bar for entering legally. That means until quite recently, people of dark skins and non-European cultures were not allowed to settle there. Although this ban has been lifted a little, remember that the first settlers still believe in the colour-bar system. Overall I think Australians are mature and tolerant........

In general you'll be treated very well as Australia is a very multicultural society. However, there are idiots in every country so don't be surprised if you come across some of ours. I find if you stick by the old adage of treating people well, they will treat you well in return.

Due to our history of settlement and ongoing participation in wars, I still think Australia overall can be racist place. We still have a long way to go when it comes to tolerance. You should be fine, we are becoming more multicultural and I hope everyone treats you fairly.
