You have to look at your accessories..... Decide what will go best. Don't be afraid to go bold. Dark colours aren't always a bad thing, especially if you have light coloured accessories!

The use of color is also something very personal. It stimulates our senses, power our mood, and helps create a particular ambiance. How we respond to an individual color depends on our nature, extroverts tend to feel happy with bold colors, while introverts prefer more passive colors.
Through using specific combinations of color, combined with a careful consideration of simple color schemes is often the most effective.
Try not to use more than one or two principal colors in a room, as well as a contrasting or balancing tone. The best way to choose a background color for the room is to trial with a palette of different shades and tones, in combination with the color and textures of the furniture and materials. Remember the general color schemes of a home have to be in agreement. The walls define the space in a room, while the colors, to a large degree, define the mood.
Colored light, furnishing materials, and structural proportions, we can create a home that is welcoming, helpful, and comfortable. Walls are similar to background music: each color tone is like a musical note can create a pleasant-sounding harmony while others grate with each other.
The color with which we surround ourselves will without doubt have an effect on us, and so it is important to feel comfortable with our choice. A discussion with a professional color consultant can help to decide individual needs and select appropriate color.
Colors can be divided into three main groups: those that stimulate and uplift, those that relax and calm, and those that provide harmony or balance. So, having taken a number of things into thought when decorating a room, such as the size of the space, the amount of light, the function if the room, and the style and mood we wish to create, we finally, and most importantly, need to consider the needs of the people who use it.

First think of a color that you like or that would create the mood or feel you want to create. Then go to a paint store and start getting some paint chips. A good rule of thumb is to always go with the middle color on the chip. This way it will not be too dark or too light.
After that, if you are like me and really like darker colors, you can get the accessories and other stuff in the darker or coordinating colors. The main trick is to keep everything in the same hue. If you pick a muted green also get a muted tan to go with it. Don't pick a vibrant yellow.

First I look at what kind of room it is and what the major use will be. Then I look at the colours that will give me the feel that will work best with that use. For instance, a kitchen/dining room combo. Obviously you cook and eat there. But...are you always trying to lose weight? If so you don't want red or oranges in there because they encourage eating. If you used a cooler colour there it would discourage eating and make the weight loss easier. Do you have a child that is hard to settle to sleep? Use a "yellow" shade of green in his room (like sage for instance). Green is calming and the less "blue" the shade the more it seems to calm people.

I went to the paint store (I used Benjamin Moore) and bought their Fan Deck with all of their paint chips in it. I took it home and played with it a lot. The decor and lighting in your room will really effect the colour - its not good idea to pick your colour in the paint store- it will look different on your walls.
When I found some colours that appealed to me I taped them to the walls and meditated on it a while.
You can also go onto the websites of most of the paint manufactures and see the colours (but I find they are close but not a true reflection of the colour due to the limitations of computer monitors. )
With my previous house I had a decorator from the paint store come in and pick the colours for me. I was charged a small fee but they gave me a discount off the paint that made up for it. Plus I had a totally "pulled together" look and the decorator picked some colours that I would never have dreamed of painting and in the end it looked wonderful. Many of my friends and family got a decorator to pick their colours after they saw what a good job they did at my house. Good luck. Have fun.

You choose a colour for a room around the following; its exposure to the sun; its function; what you want it to say; lighter colours make rooms look larger and dark colours make them appear smaller. You also need to take into consideration the colours of rooms butting up to your room... try to create some sense of colour flow which is easy on the eyes.

I recommend looking at your wardrobe. The colours you wear the most are likely to be the ones you like most in your room. Don't forget to coordinate with your other items, the clothing analogy works here as well.

What's your favorite color? Don't pick something too dark because it'll make for darker mood swings.
