a solar eclipse is when the moon comes in between the earth and the sun . thus u can see the sun partially or it is completely covered . this phenomenon happens only for a few minutes as all the three objects are themselves rotating/revolving.
about the harmful effects the only problem is the strain in the eye due to looking at the sun for a long time which is harmful even when there is no eclipse

The Earth rotates around the sun, the moon around the Earth.
When is all that rotation the moon turns out to be between the Sun and the Earth blocking the sun light, is like a sunset in the middle of the day until is dark on Earth.
It lasts only a few minutes and only darkens a certain area of the Earth. Every eclipse is different so the darken place varies.
