LOL is a "shorthand" version of laugh or laughing out loud that is frequently used in communicating through internet messenger programs. There are quite a few other abbreviations for other thoughts too, such as BRB - be right back or IMO - in my opinion or my favorite LMAO - laughing my *** off! They are all in fun for the most part!

well the original meaning of "lol" when it was first used was lots of love. This could be extended to "LOLAK" Lots of love and kisses.
now however the common interpretation of lol is laugh out loud and is used when describing to someone that you are laughing and or that what you have just said was a joke
