My apartment door opens directly into my dining room. There is no vestibule. And that is the problem. There is no sense of transition from the outside apartment hallway and the interior of my apartment. How can I make this door less glaring? The door is in the corner of the room. I was thinking of perhaps wall-hangings or large plants? What about placing something very eye-catching by the door (like a large vase) to distract the eye from the door? I am also considering a room divider or privacy screen . . . but the problem is that the room itself is not all that large, about 17' X 15', and I fear screens or room dividers would dwarf the room itself. The walls are mostly off-white and so is the door color. This door is so "intrusive" it's driving me crazy. Please help. Thanks.

You could put wainscott and frame moulding on the walls of your dining room. Remove the knob from your door and replace it with a one sided knob (that will be on the outside. Use pressure locks that you can apply pressure to open and close the door on the inside and finish and paint the door to match the dining room walls. Allow the moulding to line up exactly with the edges if the door. You may attach a bolt lock to the inside of the door for security purposes. This will hide the door completely.

It may be more extravagant than what you were thinking, but hey, you asked. :)

If the door is a paintable one, it might be possible to create a min- place of interest by using an interesting tall plant in a large pot, along with a large print above this on a wall adjacent to the door. i would probably work in neutral pi\aint colours, like taupes and beiges plus an accent colour in the print. What you need to do, is pull the eye away from the boredom of the plain door. try to remember, that less is often more.

Instead of hiding the door, dress it up. Hang rows of beads from the top. Put a plaque on the door. Make the door a prominent fixture in the room.

All of your ideas are good.

If storage is a problem, you might want to consider lining low bookcases to the right or left as you enter - whichever side is into the room. You'll create your own entryway.
