JIHAD DOES NOT MEAN HOLY WAR!!!!!!
i am a muslim and i understand the arabic word. jihad means to struggle in the way of allah. there are countless types of jihad. generally it is referred to as the internal struggle to do the right thing. jihad can refer to physically fighting, but there are many rules that must be followed:
1. you must be under attack and acting in self-defense!
2. you may not harm anyone that is not harming you
3. you may not harm women, children, or elderly people
4. you may not damage and land (not even a blade of grass) or structures, i.e. buildings.
the terrorrists are not conducting a jihad. they are abusing the term. please understand, they not only hijacked airplanes, they also hijacked our religion!

The word 'Jihad' is derived from the word 'jehd' which means to strive.
Jihad does not always mean 'holy war'. The holy war is something else in Jihad concept.
Muslims are supposed to be doing Jihad with themselves. When muslims fast in the month of Ramazan and don't eat even when there are so many things to eat in front of them, this is jihad.
When muslim spend some money in the path of Allah the Almighty for the betterment of poor people, it is Jihad.
When a muslim leaves for taking knowledge (to study islam or other subjects), it is Jihad.
Therefore , Jihad does not always mean 'holy war'.
But
When opponent of Allah the Almighty enforce blasphemy laws on muslims and try to demage the soncept of oneness of Allaht the Almighty, all muslims must stop them by tonge, by hand, or by weapons (by any means). This is called 'holy war' which is also a Jihad, the most favourite one to Allah the Almighty.
I would like to urge all non-muslim brothers to please clear any mis-conceptions about islam and don't believe those who just exploit islam.

Jihad is a holy war.
Holy war is defined as: A war started or perpetrated based upon a strong religious belief, or beliefs.
Jihad is generally declared in middle eastern countries.
A perfect example is the war between Islam and Judaism that is currently going on in Palestine, between the Palestinian and Israeli peoples. This is a war of religion, that has been carried out for hundreds of years where each side believes that their "god" has deemed the other unclean, or not worth living, and thus must destroy all who follow the opposite (in the conflict, not by belief) religious system.

Its total and absolute b*llshit. If Muslims want to have Jihad, then Christians should start up the effing Crusades against them, return the favor and let them see how it feels.
