The honest answer from me is I don't know what God is going to do. I can share what I think would happen in that situation. I can share what I would do in that situation. I have not met anyone who has a clear understanding of the mind or heart of God. If we understood things the way He does....we wouldn't need him. My opinion is NO. For me if I have hungry kids that need to eat, and I have exahausted all of my resources to provide for them. I will steal food for them and accept all consequences of that action. Up to and including burning in hell for eternity. If that is the way God is he can kiss my butt.

Does God punish anyone? This question implies that God takes an active role in human affairs, and there's really not much evidence for that. Only someone who attributed all good and bad fortune to some sort of divine will could believe in God's ability and/or willingness to punish people.

Now, as for whether or not your person should be blamed for his actions, I'd say yes. You cannot usurp another's rights simply because it suits your interests. The "significance" of getting robbed is relative. You might not think it would be that important to the store owner, but what if it is? What if he needs every dime he earns? What if he doesn't need it, but simply wants it? It's his right to choose. Stealing from the innocent is always wrong. The store owner has the only rightful claim to the money in his register, therefore the thief is in the wrong, regardless of his life situation.

If God punishes people for criminal and civil offenses, then God ought to punish for that. But I really wouldn't expect God to take action. Under most Christian ideologies, a person can still achieve heaven if he confesses his sins and expresses faith in Jesus Christ. Some ideologies require atonement, so if you want to call that punishment, I suppose you could. Atonement (in Catholicism in particular) is developed and implemented by humans supposedly acting in accordance with God. So I suppose you could call that punishment by God.

Either way, the thief is not justified.

When a man commits a crime, he is punished by his society, not by God. Robbing a store is obviously only a very temporary solution to his problem and may create problems for other people. It's one thing to "loot" to feed your family in an emergency, another to deliberately hold up a store, putting the people who work there at risk. God looks more at our motivations than our actions and God is ready to forgive us if we repent. God would want us to try to find a better way to solve our problems.

Wrong is wrong, no matter what the reason. But the good news is that God always forgives. God will never condone stealing, but He will not stand around the rest of your life saying, "Remember when you stole that time?" When God forgives, He completely erases your sin.

"Go and Sin no more"

Oh, I also do not believe that God sits around doing bad things to be as punishment. I believe that everything God does is for a reason.

God looks at all sin as bad. I take it you don't know much about God. Try calling a baptist church in your area. Go tell of your need and ask for help. If it's a real God fearing church, you'll get help. If you do this for a way of living I' d strongly suggest you move and find a new area.. As for a job,try construction as this is busy time and you'll get work. Nobody is so bad that you can't find work. J Kelly

Absolutely.
Consider that if a man gets to this point, it is almost certain he has committed many sins already. What would make him unable to get a job? Is he a criminal? A blatant liar? A suspected thief? These things are all the foundation of his predicament and the resulting sin is still and always will be a sin and is not excusable.

Yes, as there is always an alternate way of assisting your family. There are people who take up to 8 jobs (if not more. I've known people who had 4 different households to clean per day) per day in 3rd world countries to sustain their families. Besides, he can always ask the store keeper for some food. It works back in Brazil.

There are jobs out there. You can be a Walmart greeter or work at McDonalds. Stealing is the easy way out. I don't know about if God will punish, but a judge will if you're caught. Get a Job!
