There's a nice big one at the south east corner of central park in NYC (not far from FAO Shwarz) of General William Tecumpseh Sherman, He's the ruthless bastard that burned Atlanta to the ground during the War of the Rebellion, also famous for the quote "War is Hell".

Supposedly, if one hoof is raised, the rider was wounded in a battle, a rearing horse signifies death during battle and all four hooves on the ground means that the rider survived all battles unharmed.

My guess is you are talking about the stance of the horse representing how the rider died. Old wives tale! The stance of the horse (rearing, one foot up, all feet down) is the whim of the sculptor!
