It adds additional "wetness" for sex. Normally, when you are aroused, you'll have a lot of fluid in your vagina which makes you wet (not pee wet, moist wet). That allows the penis or dildo to enter you with no pain.

For women who don't get wet, they use lubricants. Most condoms offer lubricated versions. If you aren't using condoms, KY or Astro-Glide are good lubricants.

Never use Vaseline or petroleum jelly with condoms, as they weaken the latex.
