I volunteer as a big brother and my little brother has really bad breath. His home smells bad, so his clothes smell like his home. His hair if often flecked with dandruff. What's the best way to start the discussion?

it really depends on how he is. how much does he respect you? how long have you known him? does he know his home stinks? if so that would help in just being straight up with him. but sometimes being indirect is better. if he's into girls you could give him some "pointers" on how they like guys to be. or you could emphansize on the showers you take.

I'm sure if you said something to him, it wouldn't be the first time he'd heard it. Kids can be very vocal and cruel to others that don't meet the requirements of cleanliness.

Obviously his problem with hygiene is not his fault as you say his home is not clean either. Perhaps you could start out by asking him what scents he likes when it comes to soaps. Ask him what shampoo he likes best, as well as toothpaste. This can open up a conversation that might surprise you. He may confide in you that he doesn't have a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap or shampoo in his home. Perhaps he has no washer or dryer either.

Money may be a factor in his lack of good hygiene or it could just be that his parents never taught him because they don't know how or they're just plain lazy.

However, once you learn why the problems exits, you could help him by purchasing some of his favorite products for him while taking him shopping. You can teach him how often he should brush and floss his teeth and tell him how important oral hygiene is. Teach him about dandruff and what types of shampoo's he could use to combat it.

Many areas of the country have dental clinics for those that are poor. You might want to check to see if he would qualify, he probably needs a good dental cleaning and perhaps some of his teeth are in need of repair.

If he seems interested in learning how to do his own laundry, you could take him to a laundry mat (along with his clothing), and show him how to sort whites/darks etc.. Purchase some detergent and if needed some stain remover, a little bleach and be on your way.

This could change his whole world and you may be the key to his future success!! I wish you well on this journey. You're obviously a very giving person to be volunteering and this little guy certainly needs some direction.

I don't believe it is his fault he stinks. I grew up in a home that stunk and even though I bathed as often as I was allowed, even if I had just bathed I would stink like the house when I left it.

I would just buy him some cloths and some hygiene products and allow him to clean up at you house before you go anywhere. Take him to the store and tell him you have to buy some personal hygiene products for your self and would like to buy him some as well tell him to pick out what he likes to use and tell him your favorite products. Then offer to buy him a new outfit to keep at your places for when you are together.
He probably looks up to you as a role model and is embarrassed because he knows about his problem but is not able to do anything about it. Get Him some body spray so he can spray his cloths so he doesn't have to go to school smelling like his home as well.

Start a discussion of personal hygiene and then to the way people smell.
Maybe because it is an environmental smell they live in they don't even relies that they do smell.
If it was your brother wouldn't you tell him or even if it was you wouldn't you want someone to tell you.
Good Luck

let them watch the movie w/Adam Sandler Big Daddy, and tell them no one wants to be the stinky kid in class. Talk about puberty and buy some deodorant and things to help spruce it up. Good luck!

If you are really close to him, you can tell him straight forward. Infoprm him that it is proper to be tidy and clean always. But since he is a kid, cleaning his house would be impossible or he can only do so much. Good luck.
