Any surgical procedure carries the risk of infection. A life support machine like a dialyses machine or a heart-lung machine involves intrusion in the body, which can cause infection that could result in death. An Iron Lung, which is almost never used now days, was a life support machine for polio victims. It was just a pressurized container so it didn't carry the risk of infection.
