Jesus gave us a command in Matthew 28:19-20, "Therefore, as you go, disciple all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you each and every day until the end of the age."

Now, we see that we have the command to disciple people. As cirque de lune mentioned, the word comes from the root, "discipline." We are to become disciplined in the faith. It is advisable that you find a mentor, who will be able to guide you in the faith. There are also excellent discipleship resources available through various organizations such as the Navigators. I can post a couple of links in the sources section so you can research some.

disciple comes from discipline.
in other words, you train yourself to live a certain way and believe certain things. like people who study to be a doctor, or study to be a lawyer.
the disciples were those who followed Jesus around 24/7 and learned as much as they could about his teaching. today, nuns and priests give up all material possessions to focus all their attention on Jesus.
