You should look for a "Hobby" breeder not a puppy mill. Most good breeders have waiting lists for their puppies and only produce a few litters. The parents should have OFA hip and elbow clearances to check for dysplasia, a CERF exam to check for eye problems, and any other tests to rule out other genetic problems rotts are prone to. Please never get a puppy that is less than 12-15 weeks as it has not been properly vaccinated and can pick up diseases. The puppy should be vet checked, dewormed, and had two puppy DHPP vaccines. After you get the puppy have it checked by your vet immediately. Most puppies have intestinal parasites that can make them very sick if not treated properly.
After all of this depending on the bloodlines, and the area I would say $800-$1200 for a puppy.

Good German lines run about $550-$600 for males and about $600-$700 for females. American bred runs about $450-$550 for either gender. Try finding a shelter dog first though - you'd be surprised how many purebred "bully breeds" end up there. Try www.petfinder.com (shelters generally charge $100-$200 and that includes spay/neuter and up-to-date shots - major bonus!)

My brother paid $750. for his. Don't go cheap and get one from a pet store or puppy mill; the temperment is critical with this breed and you MUST get a pup from a reliable breeder. Rotts do not have to be unpredictable or vicious, but you must be a responsible owner. Talk to your local vet regarding qualified breeders.

Pure bred dogs are really expensive, try getting a mut mix from your local shelter (slot cheaper). Also, muts are less prone to problems that run in the breed.

My sister paid $500 for her Rottie pup. BE CAREFUL!!! Make sure the puppy's parents don't have the same mother or father or both - you increase the chance of hip displaysia. It happened to my sister, and her dog's hips and knees were bad.
