Go to radio shack and ask for an outdoor AM antenna. It's basically a long piece of wire with ceramic insulators. That antenna will greatly improve your AM reception, and it will also recieve HF ham and commercial shortwave broadcasts if you have the right radio. I use one and I can listen to any AM station around, hundreds of miles, and I can pick up cool shortwave programs from other countries.

If you are experiencing static all you need to do is wait until the thunderstorm has passed - that's what causes static.

Now, it isn't really static is it?

The only thing you can do is use a good, proper, antenna. A long piece of wire, as long as you can possibly install, several tens of yards long, on your property, and as high as possible.

And if the radio has a terminal for a "ground" connection, connect it to a good earth.
