The baby on board stickers are for firefighters responding to an accident...so they will look for the baby. That is the main purpose :)

I've read this book as well and found it interesting. I think that many people can't envision their child, especially when they are pregnant, as an adult. That's why everyone seems to want to name their child something "cute". My mother wanted to name my siblings and I something "cute". She named all four of us after secondary characters in the Narnia series. I (female) got Rillian Hwin Lastname, the name of a prince and a talking horse. When I was in my early twenties I found that people in my chosen field rarely took me seriously, at least until I proved myself. Seeing this I legally changed my name. Because of this I don't believe that this is a generational phenomenon. There have always been some people who give their children silly names. I too get a little irritated with people who put forth outrageously ridiculous names and then righteously claim "the only opinion about my baby's name that matters is my own!". They are half right. I don't think that people should name their children based on what others (family, friends or people on y!a) think. On the other hand it is the mark of a responsible parent-to-be to take into serious consideration how a name will affect their child. EDIT: In an act of true rebellion from my mother (who I do dearly love) I named my own son William. Oh the horror.

It does not matter how a sign like BABY ON BOARD "makes you look", as a parent you have a right to show off your children, and ask others to at least keep in mind that you have a child in your car before cutting you off on the freeway...also, another person had a great point, if you were in an accident, the emergency crew needs to know if you have a child(ren) in the car. Just knowing that a child normally is a passenger can be a life saver.

Actually when my first was born I read an article in some parenting mag that said that the baby on board stickers actually deter other drivers. And it showed 80% of other drivers pay attention to and be more careful around a car sporting one.

i could see in an emergancy situation they would possibly help, but what if the baby isn't on board and some rescue worker goes back to try and find a kid who's not there and then the car catches on fire and the rescue worker gets hurt or worse, sometimes soccar moms should just keep their babies and their stickers at home.

People 'should' do a lot of things, but they dont. Sometimes I see parents driving with kids and think that they need one of those stickers on their front windscreen facing them, so they remember what the hell it is they should be doing.

I don't think they ever really had a purpose other than to show off that you have kids. We should all be driving safe no matter who's in the other vehicles, because don't we want them doing the same for us?? Even when the kids aren't in the car??

Its a warning to others that the person driving the minivan is late on her way to soccer practice and is on the phone while her three other rugrats are screaming. Basically beware of this vehicle is what it means.

Yeah i think they are irrelevant and drivers dont pay attention to them anymore. You are absolutely right they should be careful regardless

It is a warning to you that the driver is either:
1. a new parent
2. a parent with more than one child who is trying to multi-task, and may drive recklessly.
3. a parent who has one or more screaming children in the backseat, so they will not be driving well.
