DEPENDS HOW GOOD YOUR EYESIGHT IS. EVEN WITH HDTV IF YOU SIT TOO CLOSE YOU WILL SEE VIDEO "NOISE". THE NEWER 1080i (INTERLACED) MAY ALLEVIATE THAT A BIT. EXCEPT FOR HI-DEF DVD'S NOTHING IS BROADCASTE IN THE 1080i FORMAT.
I'D GO TO A ELECTRONICS STORE AND LOOK AT THE TWO SIZED TV'S FROM THE DISTANCE YOU PLAN ON VIEWING ON YOUR BOAT.
BON VOYAGE!

Ideally the screen width should fill a 30 degree angle for HDTV. For a 37" diagonal screen this works out to about 4.5ft., for a 27" screen 3.5ft. For such small screen sizes most people do not sit that close, but those are the optimum viewing distances. I would say that a 37" screen would work well in your case.
