Would that be a cool surprise, or is that something you would of rather discussed ahead of time? It costs about $170 for the kit I want to get and I am wondering if that would be a nice gift for a beer enthusiast who like to cook?

I would think that any man would be happy to get a brewing kit as a gift. It is the gift that keeps on giving all year long.
Especially since he likes to cook. He will probably love to actually hand-craft his own signature brew.
I think a brewing kit is a fantastic idea! If God-forbid, you ever break up with this guy, I would like to propose to you!!! Anybody that could come up with a creative gift idea like that would be a real catch. Your BF is a very lucky man.
I wish you luck, and hope he loves the gift.

I bought my dad a beer brewing kit and he loves it! Go for it, but save the receipt just in case, lol.

I think it is so wrong! But he'd love it, he'll think he's getting lucky though, and it's not ROMANTIC. Price isn't an issue unless ur dating status is ? or u choose to, but ur only a gf, I wouldn't pay that much. Plus, the other reasons too. No way. I'm old fashioned though.
