First, get someone to donate their business to hold the event. Next, call or personally visit local businesses and ask for donations that you can raffle off. (Hotels- a night's stay; restaurants - gift certificate; or any local novelty store that would give you a gift card). Most places are happy to oblige as it's always wonderful to help others in need, and it's free advertisement.

Good luck and bless you.

A few suggestions:

1. Instead of BBQ, try spagetti. It is very cheap...unless you are getting the meat for free. You might be able to even have a food kitchen or some other charity donate it if you can show that you are not keeping money for a profit.

2. Get local businesses to donate something small for a silent auction (where you have a piece of paper in front of the item and throughout the evening people can cross out the last bid and bid over it). People will pay much more for simple baked goods and other services if it is to benefit a child.

3. Texas Hold Em is a great idea to raise money. Make sure you are conducting it legally however.

4. Use local businesses as advertisers for your event. I can't think of a single business that would turn down your offer to put up a flyer in their store window.

Ask different stores to donate items. They are usually willing to do this, and it's advertisement for them. Do you have a Snappy Lube? If so, ask for a certificate for a free oil change. Try video stores, fast food, movie theaters, etc. You'll be amazed how giving some of them can be. Some people ask for donations from the community and auction them off to the highest bidder. People are usually willing to pay more for a benefit. Also, buy raffle tickets for a 50/50 drawing. The winner usually donates the money back to the patient, and you can buy those tickets at your local Wal-Mart store cheaply. How about a cake walk, bake sale?

By the way, good luck. Hope some of my ideas helped you a bit.

If you know people and businesses in the community, ask them to donate items such as flower arrangements, free hair cut, free lawn service, free baby siting, pet sitting, home made cookies delivered to the house, etc. Then sell raffle tickets for $1 each and give out those cheap, but useful services by community members.
