Bacteria and viruses. Things like the common cold. Man had immunities that the Martians did not, so it killed them. They became exposed because they drank the blood of men and breathed the air of the earth.

They did not show what killed them in the Tom Cruise ver. If you watched all three of the W. O. T W movies you will see a scientist gave them one of them rabies which spread through them all.

The bacteria that live in the water. The aliens got in contact with water from the blood they sucked from the human bodies.

What killed the aliens? EXCEPTIONALLY bad screenwriting, I presume. Either that, or immense alien stupidity. They've been watching us for millions of years... and they never bothered to do a scan for harmful organisms? Morons!

Basically, the earth did. Common bacteria that are "normal" to Earth's ecosystem (that we need to co-exist).

I loved that movie, but hated the ending. Not that anyone asked :)
