extremely broad question. Depending on branch(Armor, Artillery, M.I. etc.....) Could be a regiment, brigade, group, or even a couple others. All are pretty close in size, the names do change.

A Lieutenant Colonel commands a Regiment. A Full Colonel doesn't!

Cavalry does no longer have Battalions they have Squadrons. Ask him! i'm positve he can grant you with the most precise thanks to do this. in case you do not opt to the contact him my suggestion is: LTC John Smith, "Insert postion" third Squadron, 74th Cavalry. on condition that he would nicely be XO or another position...and that i comprehend it really is a stretch...yet back asking him will be the in person-friendly words thanks to be precise.
