I've read one way to tell chickens apart from birth is once they're feathers are dry you gently stretch out one of the wings. If two of the wing feathers are longer the its a female but if only one wing feather is longer then the others then its a male.

Is this true?

also are there any other ways I can find out the gender of a day old chick?

Please no jokes or wise cracks.

You are right about the feathers on the wings... but also another way is a hen will get wing feathers first. What I mean by wing feathers are the tips of the wing will start growing their first colored feathers and lose that baby fuzz look they have when first born. Unless you are skilled at doing the vent check I wouldn't advise doing that check because you could crush the baby chick. Also roosters are slower at size development... hens are usually larger than the rooster for some time... I used to think I had a runt until I figured it out that it was a rooster. Aside from those all you got left is waiting until they are about 10 weeks old or so and you can tell a rooster from a hen fairly easily. Good luck!

The only way I know to sex chicks is to litterally squeeze the poop out of them and then a male has parts that come out of the hole after the poop...honestly. Best wishes

give it a few days and when it crows or does the 'cockadoodledoo' thing you'll know its a boy. That's the only way I know how to tell
