I was looking at a cutaway profile of the 'OriginalBed' Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System and it shows (http://www.tempurpedic.com/NR/rdonlyres/E9C9A2DC-B19A-43FD-80C7-1C0DD47D6350/326/product_main_originalbed.jpg)
that the majority of the mattress is a 'conventional foam base', wouldn't it just be cheaper to but a mattress cover from there?

ya but u wouldnt get the full effect. i have a tempur pedic matress and its heaven, swear to God. my sister had a cover, its nice, but not nearly as nice as the real thing

This mattress in a queen is 1000+, and from my experience in the furniture industry, no it is not worth it. I have been in the furniture industry for a few years now, and i have learned the an innerspring system is best for back health. Tempur-Pedic offers little support. If you are liking the feel of visco foam (did you try the mattress? it is best to do so before you buy) Try a Simmons or a Sealy, both offer innerspring and visco foams. I would go with a Simmons, the mattress never sags. Go out and try a few and ask your sales person (i always ask the manager) to show you the visco mattresses and then tell him/her to get lost.
I have found that there have been more problems with Tempur-Pedic than benefits. Here a few of the complaints i hear the most...
I feel like i am sleeping in a hole that i cant get out of
When i roll over at night, i have to fight to roll over and then i just fall back into the hole
I cant have sex on this mattress, no bounce or $%&$@%#^% (just imagine)
Its sooo hot! (duh! you are sleeping on a block of foam!)
and it goes on and on

I'm glad you asked this question, I've been wonfdering the same thing. I was watching QVC and they have a topper that is tempur-pedic with a feather bed topper on top of that, I think I am going to try it first.
