Plastics and glass decompose with time, because of their nature ant the chemicals used in preserving both the container and the water, try storing tap water in a jar of glass or plastic for a month, you wll notice a colour when the jar is emtied, so manufacturers put a best before date on them to protect themselves from (litigation) law suits

Chemicals are used in the cleaning process. Also plastic water bottles can absorb poisons if stored near them I beleive that happened about 6 months ago with a particular band. Plus they are not always airtight so air and bacteria can get in.

Can see were you are coming from with this one. Only natural running water remains fresh as it is constantly in the cycle, evaporating, condensing and being naturally filtered. Still water will become stagnant due to the reasons that have been previously stated.

The water in the bottles isn't sterile so I imagine that bacteria can grow in them.
