Yes, but that doesn't mean you have an excuse to steal no matter what anyone tells you, even as a joke. Stealing makes their insurance go up, which makes prices go up, which just makes it harder for people to buy the merchandise next time.

All stores carry insurance for liability, and for losses due to "acts of God" or fire, but not against shoplifting. These are losses that can be a tax write off at the end of the year.

Yes, to cover accidental or catastrophic damage. Flooding or fire, for example. They do not have insurance that makes it OK to shoplift, they cannot recoup losses on that, so don't do it. That's what raises prices!
