My female St.Bernard is 16 month old. I thought dogs could only get pregnet when they are bleeding, so I was looking for a stud after she was done. I guess they liked each other. I`m not sure she is and I am taking her to a vet. No I`m not a expierenced breeder, but those had to start somewhere. I don`t need to hear how irresponsible I am. My dog and her "boyfriend" are both registered. I`m not interested in breeding showdogs, but I am true to the breed, meaning the good looks and exelent temprament. What can I expect? How badly is this going to hurt my dog? Should she get an abortion?

Well, responsible breeders don't start out by breeding a dog. I mean this kindly, too. They start out by reading books, talking to other breeders, and talking to vets. This way, dogs and puppies do not fall victim to mistakes that could be avoided. However, the damage is done, and now you need to take care of her.

The puppies can be aborted, yes. Talk to your vet about the process. Otherwise, you have a LOT of work to do. Read as much as you can, email other breeders and ask questions. See if one of them would be willing to mentor you. I have never regretted having mentors for myself. Make your vet your best friend, too.

Go to the AKC and start researching. They have a lot of info for breeders. http://www.akc.org Check out the "Breeders" section of the site.

I hope all goes well.

since the female is 16 months old that is a lot better than it being 6 months old. It happens all the time. The reason it is recomended to breed after the first heat is to make sure the dog is mature enough physically wise. I deal with the smaller breed and there 2cnd heat is normally around when they are 12months old. Dog's can get pregnant anytime during the heat cycle. It has even been known for them to get pregnant 2 weeks after they stop bleeding. The best time to breed is between the 11th and 15th day of the heat cycle. Since you think your dog may be pregnant and if you want the puppies then I would wait untill about 3 or 4 weeks before I take her to the vet. They have a pregnancy test, I am not sure how it is done. It is done by the vet, and there is a certain window period that this can be done. The vet can do an x-ray to see if your dog is pregnant. They normally do this to the dogs that are prone to have c-sections to see how many pups she is going to have because if she don't have all of them you will definetly want to know. I live in MS and if you do an emergency abortion then they make you spay the dog that you get the abortion done on. good luck.
63 days is the time it takes for the dog to have puppies from the day it is concieved. definetly no more than that
I would think your dog would be fine in having her pups though. Just talk to your vet. They have several muts running around having puppies as soon as they can.

Well 16 months is young to be breeding a giant breed dog and it will be somewhat hard on her health.
You need to learn much more before you begin breeding and your dog should have been screened for hip dispalsya before you breed. That is not even done until they are 2.
Since you have already done the deed you now need to get as much info as you possibley can in 63 days.
Good luck I hope for the sake of the pups you have bred you get some good info and the right information before your new pups arrive.

It is after your dog is done bleeding and towards the end of her heat that is the prime time to breed. If your dog's body is not ready for pups than her body will just absorb them and she will not have pups. If all is well than you will be a Grandma in 9 weeks. Relax and enjoy your new pups.

I worked for a vet & we had champion show St B's Everytime she bred her's she brought them in for a C-Section. These dogs cost Thousands & even with proper vet care from conseption to birth she usually lost at least 2. I hope you're prepared for the vet bills. If you love your dog, you will get vet care from now until she has her pups. Good luck!

Yes, you should definitely have her spayed immediately. That is the safest for her and in the best interest of the breed.
