Some people simply shouldn't be answering - they don't have a clue. Windows 98... sheesh.
check out www.distrowatch.com for a list of distributions, but as long as the laptop has 128 MB of RAM, then you should be able to run just about any distro. Otherwise, you might need older distros or live distros such as ubuntu live, knoppix, or Suse live.

Download any of the live Cd's and try them out on you laptop to see which one you like before you install. I have tried Ubuntu on a old desk top and like Damm Small Linux & Puppy Linux on laptops.

Take a look at this website. It contains a very good list of versions and you should be able to find what you need. But most successful versions and small versions seem to be based on Slackware, so that's worth looking into.

If you want text mode you can try debian or slackware, if you want graphic, then try knoppix.
