A dog's hearing much like a cat's hearing are much more keener than a humans hearing is. As for storms, they can hear thunder from miles away that haven't reached your home yet. As for fireworks the sharp and loud booms and whistles actually hurt their ear drums and cause them to whine and hide and scared.
The only thing I can suggest for your dog, is to ask your vet if he or she could give you some calming drugs for such of these occasions. The drugs shouldn't harm your pet in any way and in fact mellow them out more when storms and fireworks are around. This drug is often used to give to a pet when they are in cars a long time or going to the vet.
Good luck to you and your dog! Pets are wonderful creatures for us humans who love them! May you and your dog have many happy days ahead!
I hope I was some what helpful!

Lots of dogs are scared of loud noises, like thunder and fireworks/guns. Praising a dog while it is scared just enforces the fear as the way you want it to act. Get a CD/tape of thunderstorms, play it softly at first, getting louder as you go(slowly over weeks or more), and if the dog reacts better and starts to show no reaction, THEN you praise it for acting the way you want it to. Also, there are some dogs that just have to be sedated during storms, so if re-conditioning doesn't work, you'll need to talk to your vet. Good luck!

When you know a storm is coming or hear fireworks , turn on the stereo or play music in the room and give the dog a favorite chew toy. Stay near the dog if possible to reassure him or her they are safe. Another way is to play music and engage the dog in a favorite game until the storms pass , this will distract the dog , turning attention away from the noise.

You probably can't 'break her' of it. You can try to help her get through it by being calm and gentle.
You may also want to put her in a large closet that's insulated from the sound. She'll may feel more safe and secure this way.
And please, if you keep her out, be extra careful when coming and going. Sooooo many animals get scared from the fireworks and run away. Make sure tags on her until the fireworks are done (it may be a week) so that if she does get spooked and is able to get outside, you'll be more likely to recover her.

You cannot "break" her of a fear, just as someone could not break you of a fear that you have. Keep her inside in a safe, secure place and stay with her. Play music or the TV. Give her some treats, play some games. Look into getting a DAP diffuser, Rescue Remedy or an Anxiety Wrap, sold in some pet stores or on the web. Be compassionate - she is afraid and needs you to help her.

Pets, Children, and even some adults can be extremely frightened by thunder and loud noises they are unfamalier with. There isn't anything wrong with it, and make sure to not discipline your pet for being afraid.
Try to make your pet feel safe. Let them sit with you, give them a bone or treat to keep them occupied. Something productive like calm indoor play may be nice as well.
If you aren't able to break them of this fear, don't get frustrated. Many animals will never outgrow the fear of loud, unusual noises.

i know the feeling. my dog does the exact same thing. it could be an experience she had as a young puppy, or just a scary sound to her. all you have to do is comfort her, u do need 2 tell her it is all ok, and as her owner you wont let any thunder or fireworks hurt her.

You wont--all dogs and other animals do the same.
Whenever a Big Fireworks display is held in public areas--the local Animal Refuges usually end up full--their hearing is highly sensitive.

Its normal it happens to all dogs espically young ones. Just keep her in the house and try and calm her down by holding her or telling her its ok.
