The U.S. Flag Code states, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning".

To burn an worn out flag is the proper disposal for it. To burn a good flag is a disgrace or maybe it is dysgrace.

According to protocol, that is, indeed, the way to dispose of the flag. If you look at the alternatives -- the flag is never supposed to touch the ground, so you obviously won't bury it. You aren't about to toss it in the garbage. Throwing it in the ocean isn't very respectful -- so there aren't really any other meaningful alternatives.
Just don't use it to start the BBQ ;-)

Burning it is the correct response as many have said, but as a vet from two branches, Marines and Army, I would suggest burying it in a small wooden box. The flag represents the freedom that our country gives, and many have paid the ultimate cost for that freedom. Honor them, ma'am. Bury the flag and say a prayer for our country.

Haha I like when people say "ask somebody to do something about it".. It's like the flag is a pest that somebody else has to get rid of. I would say send it to oblivion by BURNING!!! Seriously. It's already confirmed that it's not an act of disrespect.

You can contact the American Legion or the VFW. They can arrange disposal. I once attended a ceremony done as a research project by a Girl Scout troop. The ceremony was beautiful

It is true, you are supposed to burn them. If you don't feel right about that you can call your local American Legion(or probably any other veterans organization)they will gladly give you information, as to when they have their flag burning ritual.

There is a law ,or somethin, that states, The flag is to be destroyed if it is unable or too tattered to display. The desired method of retireing a Flag or Banner of The United States is by fire.

yeah, you're definitely supposed to burn it, the point being that as Americans, we would prefer not to have any worn out tattered flags flying!
