He used to be an outdoor cat. Now we live in the city, and he is confined to the apartment. He is 17 and toys require a lot of activity. I am thinking that an aquarium, stocked with fish of course, is the equivalent of cat tv. Another mammal is out of the question, as are lizards, amphibians, and birds.

Maybe, but he might get bored with it or try to knock it over or something. I would suggest maybe getting another cat so he is not so lonely and has another one to keep him company.

How about a kitten brother or sister? (yes, I know it's another mammal). One of my cats lived to be 22, and the younger ones always took care of her. They groomed her, played with her, cuddled with her.

The aquarium is a nice idea for visual entertainment, but make sure the top is tightly secured with no 'paw sized' holes in it. My cat DynahKathryn used to hook the fish and toss them on the floor.

Just a side note: I actually bought a video of an aquarium because one of my cats loves the tv. Every once in a while I will play it for her and she is amused for hours.

I think it's the safest option. Just make sure it's a sturdy, cat safe one.

Get him some scratch posts and my cats loves to play with water. He thinks watching is trickle down towards the drain is fascinating.

Cats like places to hide so get a large sheet of newspaper, a cardboard box or kitty play house for him.

Is it possible for him to look out the window? If there is a safe sitting area by a window he can do some people watching when he doesn't want fish-TV on.

You obviously care very much for your cat. But having an aquarium could backfire-- what if you come home to find him perched on top of the aquarium pawing at the fish?

Although the fish may be scared to death, if you get a very secure lid (not mesh), it shouldn't be a problem.

This may sound crazy, but if you want to take the term "cat TV" literally, there are videos on the market of fish and birds. (Or you could just tape some animal planet.)

My vote is to get him another cat friend. If not one of your own, do you have a friend who could bring their cat over for a visit? If you got another one to visit, the old "ruler of the roost" would have fun making sure the other cat behaved. Would it be possible that you could house-sit somebody's cat who is going on vacation? You might even make some pocket $$ out of it.

an aquarium would most likley make him want to eat the fish and when he realizes he can't eat them it would shrink him with more despair
not a good idea

definately. My cat recently lost his best buddy (his brother) and I got a tank for him. He loves to watch them and put his hands on the side of the tank. weather loaches are his favorite to watch.
