Two of my grandchildren have developed 'spoon' shaped toenails. They eat fairly well - good varieties of foods. One is a twin and the other twin does not have this problem. Anyone know what causes this and can it be reversed to their normal shaped nails?? PLEASE --serious answers only.

I thought I heard that not having enough oxygen in the blood can cause spoon-shaped nails. For example, some folks with asthma, cystic fibrosis or COPD have spooning of the nails. (I've only heard of it on the fingernails, though, not the toes!)

I noticed someone else answered you with a comment about anemia, and now that I think about it, that seems to ring a bell also. So, your son or daughter (whoever the parent of the kids is) really ought to talk with the kids' pediatrician, both about the possibility of a lung disease, and the possibility of anemia.

Good luck!! :) I hope the kids will be OK!

Sometimes anemia can cause spooning of the finger and toe nails. Talk to a pediatrician and see if they feel a blood test is warranted. It might also just be something unque about the child.
