the first thing to know is that the larger dog will most likly become the dominate one withthis in mind. keep your smaller dog and your new larger dog appart for the first few days unless supervised, to prevent any unneccessary harm. introduce them the first day in a neutral area. then take the dogs into the house together and supervise the interaction. you must also know if your chihauhua mix is dominate over you this will help you in how to interact withthe dogs. if your small dog is dominate over you then do not get another dog you may not be able to handle the fights. if you are the leader of the pack then you should not have any real big problems with introducing a new dog. the better you know the normal pack behavior the better you will be at introducing the two dogs. the idea of getting along also has much to do with what we Human want to see as Dogs getting along.

I have two dogs of different ages. However they're both labs so...
Based on what I've seen I would suggest introducing them in neutral territory (like a park) and letting them get to know each other there before bringing home the new dog.

If all else fails there's always doggy relationship counseling (No this isn't a joke. My friend married a guy who had a sheltie who hated her terrier mix. Doggy relationship counseling actually had the dogs getting along.)

The best way to introduce them is to take them on a long walk together (at least 45 min with one dog on each side of you). Then after the long walk you can try to introduce them. Address any signs of aggression immediately by placing and holding the aggressive dog on its back and making it stay there until it submits (you'll know when it submits 'cause it will calm down). Don't worry you're not hurting the dog. Keep doing routine this until the aggression stops (it could be minutes or it could take days). When walking the dogs never let them walk in front of you. Daily walks together will help them bond and it is very important you immediately and continuously establish you are the dominant one in the relationship.

It may take a while. I always found it better to get a puppy.

I have a 2 year old boston terrier and got a 13 yr old chihuaha. The 13 year old didn't care for the boston. it has been about 4 months now. They are not best friends but they don't tear each other's heads off either. good luck

they will just have to get use to one another.

Chihuahuas tend to prefer other chihuahuas, but I agree with the answer referring to a walk with all three (four? more?) of you. A lot of shelters will try to arrange a meeting between two potential housemate pets anyway; they want to make sure the dog is going to the best home possible and that it won't be putting any already present pets out.

Maybe you could try and bring your dog to the place where the other dog is and see if they get along if they don't I don't know what to tell you sorry. Good Luck!
