Yes they purr when they are happy and content, but they also purr if they are in pain or injured, they purr sometimes from the first few days, to let mom know here I am I'm ok.

Cats can purr for two reasons....
First and almost always is when they are happy and content, comfortable with there surroundings and feel safe.
Also they can purr when they are scared and unsure of things.
I read this in a book but cant remember that it is called, but i think it was "How to pamper your Kitty" :)

They purr because they are happy and content. They are obviously secure with their owner and are relaxed. Some cats purr more at a younger age although some can purr thoughout their entire life!

Because they're happy. The same way humans smile, and dogs wag their tails. A purring kitty wants you to know that it's enjoying itself (usually because you're stroking it, in other words "Keep doing that!")

It's really to let their mother know they are OK when they are babies. Most often at feeding times, to signal the milk is finding its way to their mouth and tummy. Later in life they do it to show you they're hungry. Kidding! ; ) It's to show you that you feel like their mommy (or daddy) and that they can trust you.
BUT: they also do it when they're in pain!! I'm sure you can make out the difference though ; )
