Since the fall of the Soviet Union, atheism has become cliche. Sorry folks, atheists had their day in the sun, and now it's over. Their are a few atheistic states left in the world (Cuba), but without a flag-waver, the popularity has dwindled. The point is, all people follow something, or someone. There are very few individuals in the world, much less individual thinkers.

Forty years ago, you couldn't toss a rock without hitting a self-proclaimed atheist, on their way to an anti-war rally. Today's anti-heroes emulate zealots.

Unless you move in certain groups, chances are you won't notice the atheists around you. Where I work there are very few people who know me as a skeptic. And there are a couple more here who are only known to me. Daily work life doesn't create the opportunities to bring it up. It's not (usually) in the makeup of skeptics to force controversy or try to create a polemical environment all by themselves.

But if you found yourself in, for example, a graduate biology program, I think you'd find more than you probably wanted to - if you're a believer.

But hey! You never know. That guy next to you who ISN'T wearing a cross may be one.

You've probably met some. Thing is, Atheists don't have "churches" on every corner, they don't sell things on TV, they don't have their own TV Networks... and, thankfully, they don't knock on our doors at 8am on a Sunday morning to tell us the "good news"... though, to an atheist, the good news would probably be a sports team winning. Most of the one's I know in real life don't discuss religion like they do in here. Mostly because, they don't feel they need to explain themselves other than to say they don't believe.

I'm not an atheist, but I am Agnostic, which means I do not believe you can really know anything for sure about the God or Gods who control our lives. Most people do not discuss religion, because they want to avoid a confrontation (except for Jesus Freaks). I'd be willing to meet with you and talk with you about it anytime. The sooner Christian churches fall apart and disappear, the happier I will be. I'm so grateful that our founding fathers wrote a God-less Constitution. Check it out for yourself. Never says God in the U.S. Constitution. Which is to say, our government is and should be agnostic.

Do you ask every person you meet what there religion is? I am sure you have encountered many Atheists in your every day life. We just don't tend to scream our beliefs at everyone else.

It could be that you lead a sheltered life in the real world. Not encountering anyone who is obviously not of your faith leads me to believe that you do indeed lead a very sheltered life.

Not that I would ever want to encourage you to evangelize, but if you truly desire to do so, you're slacking. Get out of your church and away from your friends and go seek out the heathens!

Remember to wear a raincoat, people may throw things. :)

I'll say about 1/4 of the people on here are atheists and liberals.

One reason is there is no public meetings for Atheists - like Sunday mass. We don't go around granting the blessings of our religion to everyone, we don't go door to door trying to convert people to our beliefs, and we don't thank an ultimate being for anything good that happens in our life. So its kind of hard to spot us.

You've never encountered them because you aren't looking.

We are very polite when you wish us a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter. If we weren't, you would be offended.

Athiests don't speak up when you end a generic pray "in Jesus' name." If we did, you would try to change the constitution to mingle church/state.
