I know that the British royal family can trace its ancestry back to the fifth century A.D. with reasonable reliability, but that's because royalty keeps records which common folk normally don't have.

My family claims descent from an early King of Scotland, but who really knows? DNA testing can indicate some things, but prove little. King Edward III of England had nine children, and there are an incredible number of commoners who descend from all of them, including some U.S. presidents. Descent from royalty is fairly common, and more easily proved than when dealing with a figure like Saint Patrick.

St. Patrick lived over 1500 years ago. I think that is a bit older than your great grandad's cousin.

I doubt you are related to him, or if you are, that anyone would know. If it makes you happy to believe it though, go ahead.

The stories we have of St. Patrick are probably an amalgamation of the lives of a number of people, possibly from France and Wales. It's not documented whether he had children, though he most probably did not.

You could be. I've been told that I'm related to Zachery Taylor the older president, and to George Washington Carver!

emm...., nope.

Patrick died in AD 493 - that's over 1500 years ago! That would be one great family tree to go back THAT far!!
