Bill collectors keep calling our phone number! I have told them that the person they are looking for does not live here! They now have a automatic system and if you answer it kicks in. I want to get this stopped and tired of the harassment! One day I let the phone ring and it rang 35 times! Isn't this harassment? Does any one know what I can do about this? One day I even got in a yelling match with the woman telling her that he doesn't live here and they have the wrong number! Then they wanted to know his work number etc. I didn't give that out! Isn't there something I can do to these people also?

You can place your phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. You have not agreed to be called by these bill collectors. If they call you after you place your phone number on this list, they could face big fines! Check out the link below for more information. This is all I can think of right now, and hopefully it will help. If not, find out the name of the company that is calling, and write a letter!

I contacted the phone company when I had someone use my number as their 'fake' number. I considered it harassment and told the person several times to stop calling. To no avail. Phone company investigated and the calls stopped.

Now if you actually owe money I'd hope they call you 24/7 until you paid up. If the person that owes the money DID live with you, then give the person's new number to the bill collector.

Ask to speak to a supervisor, and then ask for their name, the name of the company calling, and their mailing address. Tell the supervisor that the person no longer lives there and you have no forwarding information. Add that if they call again, your fee for answering their questions again is $250 an hour, one hour minimum, and that you will be following with a written letter stating the same. Send them the letter (registered is best) stating the same things. Start a phone log and if they call again, send them a bill. If they don't pay it, you can take them to small claims court and get some money out of them for your troubles.

Forget the BBB, you need the FTC - they're the ones who 'rule' over debt collectors. What they are doing is harassment and it is very much illegal. Get the name/number of the company (if you don't have caller ID, get it) and report them.

Also, you are not required to tell them anything you know, because they are legally prohibited from telling you the nature of the call.

The first link is to the actual Fair Debt Collection Practices Law (federal law). The second is where you file a complaint.

We also receive calls for people who keep giving out our phone number as their own. They weren't giving it out only to creditors but giving out our number as their own when ordering pizza, getting newspaper delivery, and even for a layaway at Wal-Mart. (Too bad for them my husband works in the very same store.) We have filed an informational report with our local police department (they are considering this "identity theft") and they have turned their investigative stuff over to the DA's office. I don't know if this will work in your case, but if it goes on and on and you're able to get the person's address, etc. then this may be one route to try.

Write the numbers down and call the phone company to have them blocked from calling you.

Tell them specifically you do not want them to call you anymore, if you can record the calls (Radio Shack has excellent devices for this) Tell them you are recording the calls and if they continue you will sue them for causing you emotional distress (which you can). Also make a complaint with your local P.D. and Better business bureau
