It doesn't...that's why it is suggested that we do NOT swallow it..

Depending on the brand, the base part of the gum may not dissolve at all and is excreted like other items your body cannot digest. The sugar, sugar substitutes, flavoring and colorings should dissolve in 1-2 hours or less

It doesn't dissolve. Eventually your stomach muscles push it out of your stomach and it gets eliminated like all other waste.

It never does. It gets lodged in your appendix and you have to have surgery. (That's what my parents told ME to scare me out of swallowing it when I was a kid!)
Seriously, it resists digestion, as others have noted above, it eventually gets eliminated, pretty much in its original state.

I'm not sure that it dessolves.. I think that it just works its way through your body and then comes out of you. I mean it doesn't break down in your mouth while you chew it so why would it break down in your stomach?
