We have the Dodge Grand Caravan. We like it a lot. As for an SUV being more "suitable", the caravan does about 20% or 25% better on gas, and is a more flexible vehicle for loading stuff and people. The 2005 and later Grand Caravans have that stow and go seating thing. Really cool, you can fit darn near anything into the van with all of the seats down.

My wife drives a '99 Grand Caravan with a 3.3 liter V-6 & has about 97k miles on it. Overall it's been a good vehicle. We've loaded it up & taken trips all over Texas with no problems. It has the 7-passenger seating with removable mid-bucket seats & rear bench to make more room. The only times she took it back to the dealer for was a leaking transmission(gasket) & a battery. Other than that, just the regular routine maintenance.
We also own a Durango with a V-8. It's great for hauling tools, equipment, even kids. ;-) However, it uses more gas than the van. In addition, it's a much heavier vehicle & has a rougher ride, not to mention a bigger price tag.
My suggestion is you take different vehicles out for test drives. A few pointers though:
1. DO NOT play the radio while test driving. Sales people love to turn it up to block out the road noise. If they insist on playing it while you drive, tell them they just lost a potential customer.
2. Look only at vehicles that will fit into your budget. DO NOT buy a vehicle because of all the neat bells & whistles that will wind up blowing your bank account every month.
3. Before returning back to the dealership, ask the sales person if you can take it for a spin on the highway or through a different neighborhood. I've found some dealerships have already mapped out a route with smooth roads that will mask a vehicle's handling & ride. You also want to see if this thing will accelerate when you need it. If they refuse, tell them "Thank you for your time", then leave after returning to the dealership. Chances are they'll change their mind. ;-)
4. They will ask for your driver's license to make a copy for "security" reasons. Make a copy yourself & write on it "Not to be used for credit checks or any other personal information." Blacken out the driver's license number, your address & ZIP code. Hand them the copy, then ask for it back before you leave. If they have a problem with it, say "thank you" & leave.
5. If you plan on trading in a vehicle, make sure it is clean inside & out before showing up at the dealership to do your test drive. This gives them the impression you take care & have some pride in your vehicle. Go to http://www.kbb.com to get an idea of how much your vehicle is worth. Don't tell them you're going to trade it in. Wait until you are 100% sure you're going to buy the new vehicle before saying you'll trade yours in.

This is probably the best time of year to pick up a vehicle since dealers are trying to clear their inventory of '06 models.

My wife and I just bought a 2003 Grand Caravan. We have 4 children and it is perfect for everything we like to do.We've definently been going out alot more for day trips and stuff and the best part is we only gave $11,000 for it with only 35,000 miles,we looked at alot of SUV's but they have zero room, big on the outside, little on the inside.I'm a 27 year old dad and absolutly love our mini-van!Hope this was helpful!

A caravan? Yikes! What would you need a mini-van for that something else might not be as suitable? I would recommend an SUV.

go with an SUV. minivans are OK for gas mileage but some suv's have just as good of gas mileage as a minivan. also suv's look better, have more room, and usually are built alot stronger and are better for safety.
