Actually none of those breeds are great watch dogs. Both are catergorized as gun dogs which is a profession that doesn't require the dogs to be bred to watch out for the family. Basically what they are good for is well . . . retrieving. They might bark when they hear something but in my opinion they won't necessarily warn you every time. I have heard from a couple of breeders about Labs and Goldies and the general opinion about them is that they are very friendly family dogs that require a fairly large amount of time exercising.

Labs. I had a golden retriever who only angrily barked maybe 5 times in her life. She adored everyone. However, labs are not known for being great watchdogs. If you do get a lab, get a male,as all male dogs tend to be more aggressive. Maybe you could get a lab mixed with a guard dog, such as a Rottweiler, German Sheperd, or Chow.

they are all good dogs but for a family i would say golden retreiaver, they are great for families and yes will attack if provoked or feel a familiy member is in danger. Labs are the same. But the best dog i would have to say is a lab chow mix. great with family but very visouse against would be tress passers. a dog came into my neaibors yeard once and the lab chw mix tore it to pieces.
