Using a choke collar -the minute your dog lunges give a sharp sudden tug (not super hard just enough to remind him that you are with him) saying heel or quit or whatever word you want to use (personal preference is QUIT IT) in a strong (NOT SCREAM or evil just strong voice) release the pressure immediately (this system rewards- uses the release to reward the dog for not lunging and punishes him immediately for lunging)When the dog is walking calmly always praise in a silly happy voice. Never "choke" a dog with a choke collar like I said all that is needed is a short sharp tug. Eventually all you will need to say is Quit it whenever you are in a situation that the dog normally lunges in (like when another dog passes you) and the dog will not lunge at all. This is how my dog is trained and she has excellent leash manners, she walks beside me with her choke collar and leash just hanging no pulling at all. Hope this helps you.

If you can't afford a halti or any other type of harness that was made specfically for this problem another excellent way for you to stop your dog from pulling is to go in the opposite direction of where your dog wants to go. A dog that pulls on a leash wants to get somewhere fast so going in the opposite teaches him that if he pulls he will not get to that place faster in fact pulling will take him further away from his destination. Once he has stopped pulling then you can switch gears and go back to the original direction. Another advice is to just stop walking once your dog starts to pull and make him sit calmly and wait for you. That way he will learn that if he wants to go somewhere fast, he has to not pull his leash. These two training tips require patience and time. You might not notice a difference in the behavior in the first few session but if you are consistant, it should help with the pulling.

Obedience training and/or a no-pull harness or Halti head collar.

Take a training class with your dog so you can learn how to use a leash and collar to stop him from pulling.
There are several collars and things available to use.
I personall prefer to teach the dog to not pull on the lead rather than use a Halti or Gentle Leader type collar. As I want to be able to walk in any type of lead or collar I have.

So your dog is taking you for a walk instead of you taking him for one?... If he is pulling you then you pull him. Jerk him a little and say stop sternly. if the problem continues stop walking pull him towards you and say enough. If you have ever seen the Ceaser Millan show "dog whispher" it is a good source to help you control your dog and be the "the pack leader "... good luck!

Try a "gentle-leader" I have a very strong dog and he would always walk me! When I started training him and using the gentle-leader instead of a choke collar he walks(heals) right by my side. It really works. I don't like the choke collars because I don't think a dog will learn by choking them! gentle-leader works! Good luck!

Take him to do dog obedience classes or train him yourself. He needs to learn to respect you and what you tell him. A good smack on the muzzle will get his attention when he doesn't listen.
