An easy calculation is $1 for every $5. This is for very good service. So for $20 meal, tip = $4 (20/5 =4)

Below average service, but not to bad, $1 for every $10. So that $20 meal would be $2 (20/10 = 2)

Just round the check to the nearest 5 dollars. Use your judgment for service in the middle.

The common formula is 15 to 20% of your total check. In some states, waiters must declare at least 8% of their total gratuities at the end of each shift. Some restaurants automatically declare this amount on the basis of their sales. If you "stiff" or under tip them, then you are actually depriving of a percentage of their earnings. TIP (the acronym) i.e "To Insure Prompt Service" is just that. If you feel your waiter did not provide you with sufficient service, then you are not obligated to to, but it is polite to speak to them as to why you have tipped them the way you have. A good waiter will always check with you throughout the course of your stay to see your needs are satisfied and that everything is what you expect.

Watch Steve Buscemi's role in Reservoir Dogs.
That should give you an idea of how much to tip your waitress.

but other wise 10 - 15 % is the calculated norm.

Personally I think that tipping your server depends on your server. If you recieve bad service do you want to reward them for that?
Tipping I believe is based on how many people in your party, what you order and how long you stay.
pretty much a buck or two per person is nice.anywhere from $1 -$5 is somewhat the norm here :)

I always tip in cash.

Minimum of 15% of the total bill for good service. For really good attentive service you should tip at least 20% or more. If a server goes out to their way to help you out, like solving a problem with your dinner in a pleasant way, you should make sure they know you appreciate it, by giving them a nice tip. And if you are a regular, beleive me that the servers will know very quickly who is a decent tipper and who is not. The good tippers will get better service in the long run, and many times will end up with free food, and other things ( for instance we give a v.i.p. card ( a 10%discount) to good customers, but rarely will we give one of these cards to customers who a poor tippers.

15% is considered customary. But for me it depends on the service. If the service is good, I leave a big tip. If the service is bad, I do not leave one at all. Seldom is it in between.
If the food is good but the service bad, I do not hesitate to take the tip to the counter to have it given to the chef.

I always tip 15%. Doesn't matter how well the service is. If the service is terrible, I only tip $1.00.
